Introduction: Understanding Lymphatic Drainage for Liposuction

Lymphatic drainage plays a vital role in enhancing recovery after liposuction, making it a treatment worth considering. Following your liposuction procedure, your lymphatic system will not only be taxed with ridding the body of the excess fluid and swelling that is a part of the healing process, but also the medications required for your procedure. Throw in a hefty load of stress hormones associated with these kinds of procedures and you’ve got the perfect storm to overtax the system.  One of the main functions of the lymphatic system is to clean the fluid surrounding tissues of cellular waste and toxins, which is why engaging in lymphatic drainage post-surgery is so beneficial during recovery. Lymphatic drainage therapy stimulates the lymphatic system to work faster and more efficiently, rapidly processing excess fluid and waste. Relief and results are usually felt within the first-hour session, with clients experiencing a reduction in pain and discomfort, increased range of motion, and improved skin elasticity, as well as softening of fibrosis, smoother imperfections, and a sense of deep relaxation. By incorporating regular sessions into your post-operative care plan, you can expedite the recovery process, minimize the risk of complications, improve sleep, and reduce stress. Many patients have reported feeling more at ease and satisfied as they notice the positive changes brought about by lymphatic drainage. Making this treatment part of your recovery journey can lead to a smoother transition back to your daily routine, ultimately enhancing your overall experience following liposuction.

What is Lymphatic Drainage?

Known as lymphatic drainage therapy or manual lymphatic drainage, this technique has become one of several popular therapies offered by Modern Body for enhancing post-surgical outcomes. A gentle, soft tissue technique, lymphatic drainage stimulates the body’s natural process of cleaning accumulated waste, toxins, and cellular debris from surrounding tissues in our body. This stimulation of the lymphatic system promotes rapid processing of this waste material and excess fluid that accumulate in the body, especially post-surgery. Engaging in lymphatic drainage not only aids in reducing swelling but also enhances overall comfort during recovery. The gentle manipulation of tissues promotes circulation, ensuring that nutrients and oxygen reach the affected areas, which accelerates healing. Furthermore, regular sessions can minimize the appearance of bruising and promote a smoother contour as the body adjusts to its new shape. Integrating lymphatic drainage into your post-operative care routine offers a holistic approach to recovery, providing both physical relief and stress reduction. Because lymphatic drainage calms the sympathetic or “fight or flight” nervous system, patients often report feeling extremely relaxed and rejuvenated after these sessions, underscoring the importance of prioritizing this therapy in the days and weeks following liposuction.

The Importance of Lymphatic Drainage After Liposuction

By facilitating the removal of excess fluids, toxins, and waste, this technique not only helps minimize swelling but increases circulation and the immune response promoting overall healing. After undergoing such a procedure, your body can benefit significantly from targeted lymphatic drainage sessions, which aid in restoring balance and reducing discomfort. Engaging in lymphatic drainage not only contributes to physical healing but fosters a sense of well-being during a time when you may be feeling vulnerable. Embracing lymphatic drainage alongside traditional recovery methods can transform your experience into one that feels nurturing and supportive.

According to a study from the National Library of Medicine by Igor F. B. Masson, Bruna D. A. de Oliveira, Aline Fernanda Perez Machado, Thiago Saikali Farcic, Ivaldo Esteves Júnior, and Cristiano Schiavinato Baldan titled “Manual lymphatic drainage and therapeutic ultrasound in liposuction and lipoabdominoplasty post-operative period” published on April 2014, research shows that lymphatic drainage helped minimize inflammation, tissue fibrosis, and reduced pain in liposuction and lipoabdominoplasty during the postoperative phase of recovery. This study included 18 women of various ages during their postoperative stage of recovery from liposuction. Before, during, and after 12 therapeutic ultrasound and lymphatic drainage sessions, the women were evaluated on factors of pain, swelling, and tissue fibrosis.

Frequency & Timing of Lymphatic Drainage Sessions

Understanding the optimal frequency and timing of lymphatic drainage sessions is crucial for maximizing recovery after liposuction. Engaging in these sessions soon after the procedure can significantly enhance your recovery process. What is less commonly known is that lymphatic drainage can be started prior to surgery as a way to prep the tissue for better post-surgical  outcomes. Typically, one to two sessions of lymph drainage are recommended in the weeks before surgery. However, your therapist may recommend otherwise especially if you are having extensive liposuction, have substantial scar tissue, a history of abdominal surgeries or bloating. Although lymphatic drainage is a safe technique for most people, most of the time, it does increase circulation and can increase bleeding during surgery. So make sure to stop all lymphatic drainage (whether doing it yourself or with a practitioner)  three days prior to liposuction or any surgery. Post-operatively, lymphatic drainage can be started as soon as 24 hours. However, most surgeons and lymphatic practitioners find it prudent to wait for at least 72 hours after surgery to start lymphatic drainage. This is mainly due to the risk of increased bleeding, blood clots and infection.Talk with your surgeon about their recommendations for when and how often to schedule your perioperative manual lymph drainage well before your scheduled surgery. Just like good surgeons are in demand and book out in advance, so too will a good lymphatic practitioner.

Typically, it is recommended to begin lymphatic drainage therapy within a few days post-surgery, with sessions occurring two to three times a week initially. This consistent approach helps to effectively reduce swelling, improve circulation, and minimize discomfort. As recovery progresses, the frequency of treatments can gradually be adjusted based on individual needs and responses to therapy. Coordinating lymphatic drainage with follow-up appointments will ensure a tailored recovery plan that addresses any ongoing concerns. Post Liposuction Self-Care Tips

After liposuction or any surgery, it is important to always follow the post treatment considerations and instructions from your surgeon. Surprisingly, many people don’t  always follow post-surgical instructions for the duration they are intended, often leading to increased swelling, discomfort and even complications. So make sure to not only follow instructions correctly, but for the recommended duration. Be sure to be prepared as much as possible before your surgery. This includes having everything you need for a smooth and speedy recovery set and ready for when you come home from your procedure. Have healthy meals and snacks prepared and readily available. Have at least two large ice packs such as the Rainbow Extra Large Gel Ice Pack frozen and ready for use, a rest area set up with support pillows, a place for water, a phone charger, and whatever else you’ll need while recuperating. Most importantly, don’t forget to have your lymphatic drainage therapy sessions scheduled! You’ll be so glad you did.
